Notre carte « carrée » semble s’inspirer de la projection de Cahill/Keyes de 1909/1975 mais manifestement sans fidélité à la forme du globe, notamment aux jonctions des quatre « côtés ». Le Pacifique, tu l’as remarqué, est particulièrement déformé car il n’a pas une mais deux jonctions étirées ! Ceci dit, il s’inscrit bien dans le récit de notre voyage car c’est l’océan où nous avons passé le plus de temps.

Thanks for this comment, Laurent! I had never seen Gleason’s «world as a pancake» projection from 1892. It is fascinating to see how many different ways there can be for representing the world in two dimensions!

Our «square» map seems to be inspired by Cahill/Keyes projection from 1909/1975 but obviously with no fidelity to the form of the globe, especially at the junctions of the four «sides». Pacific, as you noticed, is especially deformed because it has not one but two stretched out junctions! This said, it does fit in well with the story of our voyage, as it is the ocean where we had spent most time in.
